Bachelor of Physiotherapy (BPT)

School of Medical Education (SME) is one of the pioneer institution providing training for Physiotherapy course both BPT & MPT which started functioning in 1993-94 with its first batch. This is the only course under Allied health Science which is a first contact health care profession getting individuals self-employed. An excellent lab with all modern equipments and amenities like EMG, EEG, PFT etc. has been provided for the benefit of the students to enhance their knowledge and to equip them to be successful professionals. 

Physiotherapy is a demanding and satisfying profession with the core being the significant hands on contact with clients and patients.  It involves the evaluation and treatment of numerous physical conditions affecting all age groups and aims at restoring normal movements, function, relieve pain, prevent illness and injury. Physiotherapist plays a very vital role as a member of the multi-disciplinary team in health care. Physiotherapists provide services to people to develop maintain and restore maximum movement and functional ability throughout the lifespan. 

Bachelor of Physiotherapy is a four and half year undergraduate degree programme including compulsory Internship of six months.

This professional degree program consists of classroom lectures, practical and laboratory demonstrations, bed side clinics, self directed academic activities and clinical postings.

In the first year theoretical and practical basis of fundamental health care subjects such as anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, human biomechanics and kinesiology, psychology and sociology are learnt.

In the second year, the students learn the disease processes through pathology and microbiology, apart from pharmacology and the theoretical and practical basis of exercise therapy and electrotherapy. The students will also be posted on rotating basis in various departments of the hospitals for clinical observation so as to gain an insight into various areas of functioning of a health care institution.

During the third year the students will be trained in the theoretical, practical and clinical basis of physiotherapy assessment and treatment of various clinical conditions in cardio respiratory medicine and surgery, general medicine and surgery, paediatrics, women’s health, burns and skin diseases, intensive care units and community medicine. They will also be posted on a rotating basis in the above mentioned departments for gaining hands on experience in assessing and treating patients.

During the fourth year the students will be trained in the theoretical, practical and clinical basis of physiotherapy assessment and treatment of various clinical conditions in orthopaedics and trauma, rheumatology, sports medicine, neurology and neurosurgery and community health. They will also be posted on a rotating basis in the above mentioned departments for gaining hands on experience in assessing and treating patients.

During the six month internship students are posted in various departments where they undertake patient care and administrative responsibilities under supervision.

Eligibility for Admission

Candidate who have passed Higher Secondary Examination of the Board of Higher Secondary Education, Kerala or examination equivalent there to as approved by Kerala University of Health Sciences (KUHS) with 50% Marks in Biology separately and 50% marks in Physics, Chemistry and Biology put together with usual relaxation of mark for SC/ST/SEBC students as fixed by Government of Kerala.

Physiotherapists have a wide range of opportunities to work in India and abroad. Physiotherapists are practitioners of choice for individuals with conditions that affect movements, function, health and wellness. They will hold all privileges of private practice; apart from these opportunities they are also required as Consultants in hospitals, nursing home, Government and NGOs, Team therapists for sporting teams. Persons with entrepreneurial abilities can excel in the field of fitness and rehabilitation by setting up their own ventures, special schools for specific conditions, Rehabilitation centers, geriatric centers, fitness club, etc.
